Military service is no joke in America or any other country around the world. With roughly 7 percent of living Americans having served in some branch of the military at some point in their lives, most families are affected in some way by the military service of a friend or loved one. Additionally, the U.S. government is spending billions of dollars on the military each year, much more than any other country. If you’ve ever completed an overseas tour of duty in any one of the branches of the military, you understand how difficult it can be to serve your country in a foreign land. Whether you’re stationed at a base in a foreign country, or you’re serving a short-term tour away, there are some important things for every service person to consider before deployment. In today’s two-part blog series, we’re going to discuss some of these important tips. Read on to learn more!

Try to Make Friends

Since you’re not always going to be deployed with your best buddies, it’s vital that you do your best to become friends with some of the people with whom you’ll be working closely. When you’re working or living in close quarters, it’s best to start off on the right foot and try to be as friendly as possible. You might feel scared, alone, or anxious about the time you’re to serve away, but remember that everyone else is in the exact same boat and is likely feeling the same way. Additionally, you might need for one or more of your new friends to have your back in a tricky or dangerous situation. For your own protection, sanity, and well-being, make friends, not enemies.

Embrace the Process

Almost everything worthwhile in your life has both its perks and the parts that aren’t quite as fun. It’s important to look at your tour, deployment, or even Permanent Change of Station, (PCS), as a season in your life. It’s likely that you’ll even look back on your time away and feel that it was quite short-lived. Since the time is going to pass anyway, and you have to get through it, you may as well adjust your attitude to embrace every aspect, even the parts that aren’t quite as exciting. Try to consider what you can get out of your tour or PCS. Think about what you can learn or take away from this process and do your best to embrace it. Trust us, your unit will be thankful for your positive attitude!

Be Productive

During your deployment, it can be hugely valuable to come up with ways to stay busy and productive. Interested in writing? Start a blog and write one every few days about life in the military, your daily routine in your foreign land, or even something that isn’t related to the military. If you’re not much of a writer, consider reading a book series, working on a craft project, or even investing in an adult coloring book. Studies show that crafts projects, puzzles, and coloring can actually help keep your brain healthy and engaged. So, before you knock these “childish” activities, consider what these simple pastimes could do for you.

Stay Connected With Friends and Family Back Home

One of the ways that most people in the military have mentioned getting through tours with their sanity intact is to remain in contact with loved ones who are back home. Keeping in touch with your friends and family is so incredibly valuable and can help to lighten your mood, remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing, and keep your feet on the ground. Try to maintain regular contact with the people in your life who matter; this mentality might also help your time go faster. If staying connected to your people is important to you, you’ll want to make sure that you have invested in an international hotspot so that reliable WIFI will never be in question. Sapphire International Mobile Hotspot has multiple data plans for different needs and budgets and has full-coverage casing most of the globe. Though serving a tour of duty or encountering a PCS is never easy, there are ways to get through your time away in a manageable manner. When you’ve decided to make the most of a tough situation, learn what you can, and finish with dignity, you’ll feel much better about the time spent abroad. Who knows? You might even look fondly on your time overseas.
